I found another little wave of migrants using the yard in Newport News this
weekend, although I was not able to spend as much time looking as I wanted to.
Yesterday afternoon I saw my first Swainson's Thrush for the yard, and this
morning I found a calling Scarlet Tanager and a variety of warblers:
CAPE MAY (1)--likely a male, judging by white wing-patch, amazingly aggressive
for a warbler!
Black-throated Blue (1)
Northern Parula (3)
Pine (1)
Blackpoll (2)
Redstart (1)
Also, noticed a good flight over the "Lion's Bridge" area of Mariner's Museum
Park this morning around day-break, with 50+ Flickers, 40 unID'd landbirds, 40+
Robins, 1 Cedar Waxwing and 1 Scarlet Tanager all noted flying over in a
roughly Westerly direction paralleling the James R. shoreline. A brief walk in
the adjacent woods was relatively quiet, but I did find my FOS Y.B. Sapsucker,
a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and single Black-throated Blue and Magnolia were the
warbler highlights. I gotta start learning some flight calls! Anyone know a
good reference source? Thanks,
Nick Flanders.
