VA-Birders,
My husband Lee and I visited Lawrence Lewis Jr. Park today from 7:30 - 9:00 AM.
It's a small but very productive park off Route 5 in Charles City County. Just
a few miles outside the Courthouse (going towards Richmond), turn left on
Wilcox Wharf Rd (Route 618). The road leading into the park has a diversity of
birds as well.
We had a total of 40 species, and in late spring many more can be found. Of
greatest interest today was an active BALD EAGLE's nest, which is visible from
the bridge that overlooks the swampy area. We saw one eagle on the nest and the
other perched on a nearby branch. Towards the end of the bridge as you approach
the hill, look to the right and the nest is in a large pine tree (to the left
of the water).
After crossing the bridge and going up the hill, we heard and then had great
looks at a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, and BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER.
Several BLACK VULTURES and TURKEY VULTURES were roosting on trees adjacent to
the James River when we arrived. Both FISH CROW and AMERICAN CROW were vocal.
At least 20 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were seen along the road, along with two
pairs of EASTERN PHOEBE and three CHIPPING SPARROWS.
Complete list follows.
