Drove up to the mountain tonight with hopes of spotting Common Nighthawk
migrating over Rockfish Gap. I arrived by 5:30 p.m. EDST. RIck Myers was
already there and we were later joined by Jim Fitzgerald.
Chimney Swift were moving through the gap, a non-stop wave, all heading
west into Shenandoah Valley. Clearly "thousands" passed through between
5:30 - 8 p.m. EDST.
First Common Nighthawk, group of 12 came over between 6-6:30 (EDST). With
brisk SW wind, they were high!
At 7:20 Rick Myers found a large group of 62 over Waynesboro in the valley
that flew overhead a few minutes later.
At 7:27 Jim Fitzgerald spotted a "cloud" of swirling CONI over Waynesboro
that produced 46 in that group.
Several small groups (8, 10, 7, and several single birds) flew over.
A total of 148 CONI for tonight. Tomorrow may bring even a better flight.
After an overcast day with threat of rain in our region, the skies were
clearing for a spectacular sunset!
