This is a belated post from Saturday evening. After returning from Wildlife
Center of Virginia where Gordy Adamski and I were introduced to creancing
with a juvenile Red-tailed and Cooper's Hawk, I sat out back to enjoy the
remainder of the day before sunset.
Not too far away I heard what sounded like a HOUSE WREN. A second time it
called a bit nearer, coming from the back alley. The third time I managed
to see it. Need to check my records but I believe this is a very early date
for my yard list.
In between the singing House and Carolina Wrens, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
was warming up with parts of his song while the Song Sparrow perched on top
of an exposed branch, facing into the sun and burst into song. Then I heard
the unmistakable chattering overhead. Because they are my official
harbinger of spring, I had to see them! I moved out into the yard, away
from the tree branches and finally saw two CHIMNEY SWIFT as they flew high
overhead heading NE.
