Tom and I decided to see what migrants were in Virginia Beach yesterday and
today. Sunday we went to Redwing Park (off General Booth Blvd) and found a
couple of BROWN CREEPERS, CHIMNEY SWIFTS and a lovely pair of Pileated
Woodpeckers. We had not been to this location in quite some time and were very
pleased to see the staff had done LOTS of clearing. It needed to be thinned
out and
we feel that this will be very productive for added feathered activity. We
plan to frequent this area more often this spring. It is a great location for
Prothonotary Warblers back by the stream and in the past a good stop for
GHO's and Screech.
Today (Monday) the weather guessers lied about the warm temps in the early
afternoon so we held off till alter to go to Stumpy Lake to check out the
activity. We saw more BROWN CREEPERS, a couple BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, PURPLE
MARTINS & LAUGHING GULLS. The trail put in by the Friends of Stumpy Lake is
where we spent most of our time. There are so many fresh holes in the trees
for
nesting in many sizes. We didn't see any being used (not to say they
aren't)...but it sure looks to be Prothonotary heaven along with the usual
places near
the clubhouse. We checked out the usual tree stump where the Brown-headed
Nuthatches have nested previuosly but didn't see any activity and no Barn
Swallows yet.I am sooooo ready for spring! Bring on the birds!
