Hello all
This past Saturday May 1st I went on a scouting adventure to the Eastern Shore
to scope out hopeful species for our annual trip to Chincoteague .
Below is the schdule & plans for the trip .
Back to Saturday the first of May . My first stop was in Newport News to see
the Monk Parakeets but I found the nest site all torn up & only House Sparrow
were around . After that I went on to Chincoteague where I found at least 50 +
Glossy Ibis & 2 White - faced Ibis on the north end of Snow Goose pool . They
were actually across the road in the other pool area . Also I had a few Royal
Tern & some Black Skimmer . Shorebirds were in low numbers . I had Semipalmated
plover Black - bellied Plover , two Black - necked Stilt Willet , Dunlin ,
Least , Semipalmated Sandpiper , Short - billed Dowitcher . There were several
Chuck - will's - widow & lots of Clapper rail in full view .
May 21 to 23 Chincoteague & Prime Hook Delware
This is the annual spring trip to Chincoteague to see spring arrivals & nesting
birds . Target birds will be all Herons & egrets . Glossy Ibis & we may luck in
on a White - faced Ibis . Hopefully we will encounter a good assortment of
Shorebirds & the one target bird in Delware will be hundreds of Red Knots
feeding on the Horseshoe Crab eggs .
Meet at the Holiday Inn parking lot at 05 :45 am & we will car pool & leave at
06 :00am . Our first stop will be Dutch Gap / Henricus Park where we will look
for the Prothonotary Warbler & Least Bittern . After that we will travel onto
Newport News to look for the Monk Parakeet. Then it is onto the Eastern Shore &
we will bird on up to Chincoteague . On Sunday the 23rd we will leave & go to
Delware to bird .
Lodging will be up to the individual to stay where their favorite hotel or inn
is at Chincoteague .
If some one does not wish to do the first two stops & they go directly to
Chincoteague we will all meet at the toll booth to the Refuge at 07:45am
