Fellow Buchanan County Bird Club members Don Carrier and David Raines joined me
today for some birding around our home here on Compton Mt. It was a nice, cool
morning - 61 degrees; the blue sky and low humidity reminded us of a crisp fall
day. We birded our yard and birding trail, then walked the dirt road down into
the woods. We were surprised to find a Black-throated Green Warbler, Hooded
Warbler, Ovenbird, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat and Yellow-throated
Warbler. We had two Yellow-billed Cuckoos in the yard and a female Scarlet
Tanager, as well as three Yellow-throated Vireos. We had remarkably close-up
looks at a feeding American Kestrel, which was sometimes harassed by the
nesting Purple Martins. One of the biggest surprises of the day was the sight
of two Great Blue Herons flying high overhead. We picked up 46 species at our
place with a total of 49 species for the day.
David had to leave somewhat early, so Don and I drove out to the nearby
Mountaintop Golf Course where we found 26 species including a male Indigo
Bunting, a species that we have not seen a lot this year around our place,
which is unusual. At the golf course we also had great looks at a couple of
bright, male Scarlet Tanagers. Below is the complete list for the day.
