The Cotton Mill Park - Berry Hill Plantation Section of the Tobacco Heritage
Trail in South Boston VA is now open to enjoy either walking, jogging, bike
riding or horse riding.
The 2.5 mile long trail should be a great place to bird watch as it will
have open fields, woods along a section of the Dan River and on the Berry
Hill end of the trail is a duck pond by Ducks Unlimited that should provide
views of ducks, herons, egrets and shorebirds.
Directions to the trailheads are as follows:
Cotton Mill Park: At the Hwys 58 & 501 Intersection take 501N to South
Boston, after crossing the Dan River you will be on the 501 By-pass. At the
first stop light after crossing the river you will be at Seymour Drive, turn
Left here (be sure to carefully search the wires on your left for Eurasian
Collared-doves), follow Seymour Dr across Main Street and you will see the
Southside Educational Center on your left and just beyond here Seymour Dr
takes a very slight left at a Y intersection.
Follow the end of Seymour Dr across the RR tracks to Summit Dr and then turn
Right on Railroad Ave with the trailhead on your left.
If you want to go to the Berry Hill Trailhead from Cotton Mill follow
Railroad Ave. to Edmunds St which becomes Berry Hill Rd
Follow Berry Hill Rd to River Rd and turn Left. Follow River Rd to Berry
Hill Lane to the Berry Hill Plantation. The trail head is to the left of
the plantation house.
Berry Hill Plantation without going to Cotton Mill Park: At 58 & 501
Intersection follow 501 bypass to Edmunds Street and turn Left and follow
Edmunds to Berry Hill Rd and then to River Road and then to Berry Hill Lane
and the plantation.

For all you history nuts, when you are at the Cotton Mill Park you are only
a short distance from the Crossing of the Dan location soon to be a small
park also. This is where Nathaniel Greene crossed the Dan River as he was
being chased by Lord Cornwallis which soon lead to the events at Yorktown
VA. To get to the park just turn left before crossing over the RR tracks
and drive to river you should see the path to the Crossing Monument.
