I drove over to Craney Island this morning only to find it closed to the
public. I'm not sure why. I then headed over to Hog Island in Surry
County and had a good time. There was a nice variety of shorebirds
present with the best ones being a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and 2
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS. Both species were found in the grassy section
at the north end. The plovers were still in a molt between alternate
and basic plumage. Other shorebird species included KILLDEER,
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, WESTERN
SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
Tern species included many CASPIAN TERNS as well as ROYAL and FORSTER'S
TERNS. A SORA was nice to see as it came out into the open while I was
scanning shorebirds. There was a nice flock of BOBOLINKS feeding on
some type of seed growing in the field. Other birds included a fly-by
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, a single SNOWY EGRET and 2 BALD EAGLES (1 ad., 1
imm.). Good birding.
