Well, it really was a chiller for the first day of spring. It was 49F when
we started and it was 49F when we finished with brisk winds from the east, in
our face as we headed out. John Young, Renee Hudgins, and Don Jeffries joined
me at Railroad Ditch at 7am for a cool four-hour walk. Highlights were
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, a flock of 300 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, a group of LAUGHING
GULLS over the swamp. There were no butterflies, not a big surprise. The
list: Carolina Wren 8, Pine Warbler 5, American Woodcock 1 (at the gate as I
left the car at 7am), Eastern Towhee 5, Northern Cardinal 1, American Crow 2,
American Goldfinch 3, Mourning Dove 2, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2, Pileated
Woodpecker 3, Downy Woodpecker 3, Wood Duck 4, Red-bellied Woodpecker 3, Turkey
Vulture 11, Common Grackle 4, Louisiana Waterthrush 1, Carolina Chickadee 7,
Hairy Woodpecker 2, Red-shouldered Hawk 1, Rusty Blackbird 300, Winter Wren 1,
Myrtle Warbler 10, Common Yellowthroat 3, Laughing Gull 14, White-throated
Sparrow 1, Northern Flicker 1, Eastern Phoebe 2, Osprey 1, Great Egret 1,
Ring-billed Gull 1, Dark-eyed Junco 3, Hermit Thrush 2, Black-and-white Warbler
1, Brown Creeper 1.
I'll take another walk in the swamp next week on Wednesday, March 28
leaving the parking lot at the end of Jericho Ditch Lane at 7am. If you'd like
to join me, please do. No reservation is necessary; just show up.
