The Hampton Roads Bird Club visited the Dismal Swamp this morning spending
most of the time at the Washington Ditch and then a briefer time at Jericho
Ditch. The sun was shining, and there was only a slight breeze. The
highlight was a huge flock of very vocal Rusty Blackbirds gathering in the
upper levels of the trees along the Washington ditch. There were a few
Red-winged Blackbirds mixed in, but the flock was predominately Rusties.
After
giving us great views for about 15 minutes, they moved off in a southerly
direction. The 40 species seen today are listed below.
