Great day, nice group including Pat and Neal Gause, Alex Minarik, Bob
Mooney, and Tim Barry. We walked north along Jerich Ditch past the second
powerline cut and back. The new bird for the year for me was Yellow-throated
Warbler singing from its usual big pine. Coming in along the entrance road
there were a few Common Yellowthroats as well as a couple of Louisiana
Waterthrushes. During the walk we had a nice performance from two Barred Owls
who responded to my calling, flew around quite a bit, called and cackled back
and forth. They were still fussing as we left them. Several flocks of
blackbirds flew over and a couple of nice bunches of Rusty Blackbirds posed for
us to look them over. The dwarf trillium were beginning to bloom. No mammals
were seen, but the Spring Peepers, a Green Frog, a Southern Leopard Frog, and
Carpenter Frog were heard. The butterfly show was spectacular and included:
Zebra Swallowtail (9), Horace's Duskywing (7), Spring Azure (60), Falcate
Orangetip (9), E. Tiger Swallowtail (3), Questionmark (1), Henry's Elfin (4),
Pearl Crescent (2), Palomedes Swallowtail (2), Orange Sulfur (3).
The next walk will be along Railroad Ditch, Tuesday March 27, leaving the
Dismal Swamp NWR headquarters parking lot at 7:30am. No reservation is
necessary, just show up. Hope to see you there. The complete list for today's
walk follows.
