Earlier this week I spotted two red tailed hawks circling high over my chicken
lot, they were chased away by crows. A sharp-shinned hawk has been hanging
around as well. In the evenings this week I have heard a screech owl in the
woods to the north east of our house and last night I heard a barred owl
calling in the woods to the west of the house.
Weather was snowy with sleet and freezing rain so the birds were plentiful
today, I had six red crossbills at my feeders; three females and three males.(
I reported these on ebirds) Also had numerous purple and house finches, tons of
goldfinches, a chipping sparrow, cardinals, doves, chickadees, titmice, red
breasted and white breasted nuthatches, ( usually have a brown headed but
didn't see it today), juncos and white throated sparrows. Had downy and red
bellied woodpeckers at suet feeders and actually had one of the female
crossbills at one of the suet feeders this morning. Had a flock of 12 to 15
wild turkeys scratching for a meal in the woods near the house this morning.
Good birding day from inside.
