Well, it felt like a winter's day when we started the Dyke Marsh excursion
this morning. There was a brisk breeze coming off the Potomac and a sheet of
skim ice on the puddles in the picnic area. Looking out at the invisible ducks
working the non-existent SAV mats, I was almost wishing I had stood in bed. But
the sun was shining and there were birds to be seen, so the three assembled
watchers checked out the two adult Bald Eagles perched in the bay and then
quickly set off down the trail to escape the wind and see what might be
hunkered
down...we didn't see or hear much...seems like the birds stayed hunkered
down...best bird of the walk was spotted by Carl - a Bluegray Gnatcatcher
working
some vines. Mockingbirds were out in force with at least 10 tallied. A few
flocks
of Robins- about 60 birds total - were seen heading north. We were joined by
the Bogars and Fred reported an imm Redheaded WP at the beginning of the
trail. Before heading home, I walked south on the bike path to the first
boardwalk to check for Great Horned Owl (not there) but I added a few more good
birds
- Winter Wren, and two Bluebirds...hope everyone stayed warm and enjoyed the
beautiful blue skies today...list follows...Rich Rieger
