Peggy Lyons, Judy Wiegand and I birded in the Stuarts draft area on Sunday,
November 14, 2004. Unfortunately we did not see any Horned Larks or longspurs.
But we did see a single Snow Bunting on State Road (SR) 652 between SRs 608
and 651. We also saw a flock of American Pipits there (and another flock of
pipits at the usual spot on SR 637 next to the Target warehouse).
We only saw geese, mallards and a single Northern Pintail at the pond off SR
624. We did not have any luck finding the Barn Owl on SR 637 which would have
been a life bird for Peggy (she did get two other lifers today!). We tried to
give her a "barn owl life-bird initiation" but it was not meant to be today.
Usually you can count on that barn owl roosting in that spot. A very large
flock (500+) of blackbirds seen on SR 637 yielded Common Grackles, Brown-headed
Cowbirds and a few Red-winged Blackbirds but no rusties.
Nothing else out of the ordinary was seen. It was a nice surprise to have the
solitary Snow Bunting pop up from the grass, fly onto the road ahead of the car
and feed on roadside along the roadside for several minutes so that we had
spectacular side and front views of it in the sunlight.
