Eighteen birders joined the walk this morning at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax County.
Highlights were 5 Red-Breasted Mergansers (1 drake, 4 hens) as well as
numbers of Common and Hooded Mergansers. Some breeding display behavior was
seen among the Common Mergansers.
With ice mostly gone from the Potomac, the number and variety of waterfowl
was up from past weeks. We found 14 duck species, including a couple of hard
to re-find Common Goldeneyes, Canvasbacks, and American Wigeon. Four Bald
Eagles were seen, with a couple of them refurbishing a nest. Passerines were
somewhat sparse, but we were delighted to see a Fox Sparrow perched high in
a tulip tree along the Haul Road.
Total species count was 49, a nice number for what turned into a lovely
morning.
