VA BIRDers,
I arrived at the picnic area about 6am and worked the trees and Ramp Rd,
then did the Bike Trail to the southern end, and then finished at the Stone
Bridge (much later, near 530 pm). Total time was about 4.5 hrs and 74
species (equal to what I encountered at Huntley Meadows for a similar time
investment), windy weather (20-30 mph in the open) and chilly in the morning
(ca. 50F). Highlights were the Black-bellied Plovers, American Black Ducks,
Boneparte's Gull, and Bank Swallows. Larry Cartwright told me of finding a
Dunlin on the mudflats in the afternoon. And it's likely the morning Field
Trip found a few more species, too. Here is yesterday's totals.
