Five people came out for the weekly Friends of Dyke Marsh walk held every
Sunday morning at 8:00 and free and open to all. The weather was somewhat
cloudy and cool, but the sun did peak out occasionally which encouraged some
more bird song. In the picnic area, we dodged many downed tree limbs caused by
last week's storm. There we found Orchard Orioles feeding young and also some
Baltimore Orioles. Osprey, including two young, were on the leaning nest in
the marina. Along Haul Road we found Indigo Buntings, a Warbling Vireo, Belted
Kingfishers and Yellow Warblers. The uncontested highlight of the day,
however, was the Least Bittern activity we watched at the point at the end of
the boardwalk. One bittern was seen flying quickly across the water from one
island to another. Fortunately, soon after this, we saw two more Least Bitterns
fly out not too far from us. One of them perched up out in the open across the
water from us and provided excellent scope views. This was a life bird for two
people in the group.
