Eighteen birders joined me today for September's first Sunday morning Dyke
Marsh walk, sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh and open to everyone.
The river was as active as the woodland was quiet. Forster's Terns were on
the move in good numbers and the group was treated to a size comparison of
Caspian and Forster's Terns as a representative of each species sat beside
each other on the SAV mats on the river. A male and female American Wigeon
spotted on the periphery of a group of Northern Shovelers was a nice find.
A Spotted Sandpiper posed for us on a rock beside the river for more than
five minutes while Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs foraged on the vegetation
mats. There were few passerine migrants, but House Wrens seemed to be
migrating through, with 3 reported.
