Today (11/6) we had 5 Evening Grosbeaks at our feeder in northern Accomac
County (Captain's Cove) mid-day. Other highlights were pine siskins, 3 species
of nuthatches, and a purple finch.
As of today, Chincoteague NWR is only open to the Visitor Center, which has an
interesting visual display on the hurricane's effects. The road to the beach,
the Wildlife Loop Drive and the trails were closed due to storm damage. Some
trails and the Wildlife Loop may open later this week or weekend. Check the
Refuge website for more updates. Our last scheduled shorebird survey (Oct 31)
was canceled due to the Hurricane. Our next survey is on hold until Refuge
staff, who are working very hard to restore public access, give us the OK.
