Heard a FOS Brown Thrasher singing this morning in the woods.
Also, a mockingbird was back in the field I walk through--hadn't seen or heard
it there since sometime last fall--which begs the question: Do our local
mockingbirds leave the area in winter, even if just to go a bit farther south?
I know of several locations where I see mockingbirds from spring to fall, but
never in the winter. Has anyone noticed that mockingbirds they keep track of
disappear in winter?
When I first brought up several years ago that goldfinches leave and winter
birds were different individuals, and therefore they are not year-around
residents as stated in field guides, people scoffed. Yet now people are
counting them at hawk watches as migrating birds!
I'd love to hear if anyone has noticed mockingbirds disappearing in winter from
their usual locations. Thanks!
Sincerely,Marlene
