My friend Seth and I spent an hour and a half (3:15 to 4:45) walking along
the Potomac at Riverbend Park to see what winter ducks had arrived.
Our best sighting was at about 4:30, just about sunset, when we had a group
of eight male and four female Bufflehead floating slowly down the river by the
observation platform. Shortly before that we had two additional male
Bufflehead flying downriver.
We also found a group of eight, female, Common Mergansers, all swimming and
diving as a group. We also found four male and three female Ring-necked
ducks; further down the river, not far from Conn Island, we found what appeared
to be two female, Lessor Scaup. There were also about 40 Coots, swimming in a
group with the Ring-necked ducks.
It was so nice to see the Buffies again,
for the first time since last spring.
