Greetings to all:
I went to Staunton River Battlefield State Park this morning to look for
ducks with Wood Ducks behind the visitor center. With high water I couldn’t
walk through the wetlands below the park so I walked down the trail to
Randolph and with the fields flooded some I was able to see Mallards, three
Ring-necked Ducks, Wood Ducks flying overhead and seven Green-Winged Teal.
Also seen was a Cooper’s Hawk, a pair of Red-Shouldered, a pair of Bald
Eagles and two immature Northern Harriers.
I looked for sparrows, pipits and Horned Larks along the edges of the water
but couldn’t find anything.
After seeing the water in the fields to the left of the trail as you walk to
Randolph, I decided to drive all the way around to Randolph which isn’t too
bad of a drive from the park. From the entrance of the park to River Road in
Charlotte County it is only 4.5 miles and then it is a 3 mile drive on River
Road to Randolph. Most of the time the traffic is heavy on this road and
there is very few places to pull off and look and it is all private land.
However today I only had one tractor-trailer go by me, a service van that
stopped and turned around before reaching me and one car to go by me.
With the road all most to myself I was able to take my time and stop and look
through the downed window openings for ducks and other birds. However there
was no other ducks to be seen or anything else that I didn’t see from the
trail.
May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You
