All,
Went by the ponds on route 254 just inside the city limits of Waynesborro this
morning and found the Common Gallinue reported earlier by Allen Larner. The
bird was perched on a dead branch sticking out of the water half way between
the water fountain and the road. I had expected to find the bird at the far end
of the pond and was assuming it wasn't there but decided to walk across the
road and take closer look when the bird was spotted. Got two fuzzy photos good
enough for ID before the bird skulked away and disappeared in the the thick
brush along the shore. This bird was rather wary so I would suggest viewing the
pond with a scope from different vantage points before trying to walk along
the pond. If I had done this I might have gotten better photos...... just a
thought...
For directions see earlier post by Allen.
On the way home I spotted a lone Immature Bald Eagle soaring above the pastures
along 254. A brief stop at Leonards produced 5 Solitary Sandpipers and 31
Killdeer. The Oakwood Ponds were barren of Shorebirds with the exception of
about 10 Killdeer.
