We are champions of the osprey - not just because they have nested on our
dock for 22 years. Rather, because they don't eat carrion! And also because
they leave their fully grown young to fend for themselves at summer's end.
This year we are somewhat alarmed by the number of Bald Eagles we are seeing
and the increased activity around the Osprey nest. Our neighbors are also
remarking on the increased number of Eagles they are seeing - so far, I
haven't inquired if it is alarm or delight.
Both are magnificent birds.
But what I really want to say is that after 6 weeks of fascinating birding
in Florida I am thrilled to be back in VA and seeing, once more, all my
little bird feeder friends: Titmouse, Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch,
Downy Woodpeckers, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow and the, now
gloriously crowned, Chipping Sparrow.
