I went out for a brief period mid afternoon to just the boat ramp area of
Riverbend and then to the upper fields
and skatepark area of Lake Fairfax. Here are the cold and damp highlights.
Riverbend 2:30 - 3:00
Pied Billed Grebe -2
Horned Grebe - 2 ( one beginning breeding plumage)
Ring Necked Duck ( diminishing numbers from winter )
Lesser Scaup 4 ( paired )
Bufflehead 40+
Common Merganser 2
Red Breasted Merganser 5 - 2 male 3 female
Wood Duck 7 ( all on MD shoreline )
Tree Swallow - 200 + ( all in a steady stream working their way upriver )
Lake Fairfax 3:30 - 4:30
FYI no White Winged Crossbills - First reported 3/15, last reported 3/22 ?
Bald Eagle - perched at far lakeside
Eastern Phoebe 3 ( all feeding directly on the ground )
Red - Breasted Nuthatch
Brown Creeper
Brown Thrasher ( FOY )
Pine Warbler -4 ( trilling )
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Eastern Towhee 2 - pair
Chipping Sparrow -( trilling)
Fox Sparrow 3
Dark - eyed Juncos - ( trilling)
Pine Siskin - 5 ( diminished numbers )
Interesting to have all 3 trillers at different times to compare
