Wednesday, September 17--Quarterly FODM members' meeting
Huntley Meadows Visitors Center, 3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria-- 7:30 p.m.
Topic: Dyke Marsh and the National Park Service Update
Jon James, Acting Superintendent of the George Washington Memorial Parkway,
will speak on management issues including invasive species, boundary
markers, pets, boats and permits. Sergeant Frank Barwinczak from the U.S.
Park Police will discuss problems such as commercial fishing, unleashed dogs
and sex offenses. More information on this program can be found in the
current issue of the Marsh Wren.

Sunday, September 28--Ecology walk focusing on "Alluring Autumnal
Arthropods"
Dyke Marsh-- 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, meet at the Haul Road entrance
Dr. Edd Barrows, Professor, Department of Biology, Georgetown University,
and expert in Washington-area arthropods, will lead the walk. Dr. Barrows
will describe the rich biodiversity and natural resources of the marsh.
Arthropod groups likely to be seen on the walk include ants, aphids, bees,
beetles, butterflies, centipedes, flower flies, isopods, midges, millipedes,
spiders and wasps. We'll be on the lookout for: clouded sulphur
butterflies, dancing white butterflies, eastern-tailed blue butterflies,
European earwigs, gold-green sweat bees, false honey ants, monarch
butterflies, spotted cucumber beetles, variegated Asian ladybird beetles,
and wandering bumble bees--among others. This is a great chance to learn
more about the ecology of Dyke Marsh.

Dyke Marsh Cleanups begin again in September. FODM cosponsors these events.
FODM member Daniel Leubecker helps coordinate our efforts.
Participants should wear long pants and sturdy boots or shoes. Trash bags
and gloves are provided. For all cleanups, a signed parental consent form
is required for volunteers under age 18. These are available in advance by
request and onsite. For further information on cleanups, contact Erik Oberg

Saturday, September 20--International Coastal Cleanup Day
Dyke Marsh-- 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Saturday, September 27--2008 Potomac Watershed Cleanup
Dyke Marsh
8:00 a.m. to cleanup by boat, meet at the Belle Haven Marina boat ramp.
9:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m. to cleanup on foot along the shoreline, meet at the
restrooms in Belle Haven Park.
Saturday, November 2--Watershed Cleanup

Weekly Sunday morning bird walks continue during the coming months. Meet at
8:00 a.m. in the south parking lot of the Belle Haven picnic area.
