Highlight of the Wetlands route in the recent Central Loudoun CBC was a
Virginia Rail, responding to audio playback to Joe Coleman, Ron Staley and
myself before sunrise. According to Joe, this is the first record of
Virginia Rail on the count. This route covers Dulles Wetlands, Oatlands
Plantation, and a few farms to the south on the east side of Rt 15.
The other highlight of the route was a Loggerhead Shrike, found on a private
farm near Rt 15. Later in the day by partner Tracy and I saw the shrike
again sitting on a white board fence on the east side of Rt 15, about 300
yards north of the Little River Bridge; this section of the fence is near a
recent accident site which knocked down a portion of the fence. (ADC

The lowlight of the route was a lack of Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Otherwise,
the mix of the typical piedmont passerines was found. I present the totals
for the day (68 species), including 1 hour of owling (the morning was
windy), below.
At the tally dinner, Joe Coleman announced that the tally was 92 species, a
good count for this CBC - the waterfowl reports appeared to be much better
than typical with even Common Goldeneye tallied on a pond near Montressor Rd
(of Short-eared Owl and Rough-legged Hawk fame).
