Adult Education Program
FAS's exciting adult education program entitled LEAPPTM (Learn, Enjoy,
Appreciate, Preserve, Protect) is a unique opportunity for those wanting
to learn more about the natural world.
FAS members and others in the community can select from a wide range of
subjects offered in both the spring and the fall.
A special course of study within the LEAPPTM program leads to a
certificate as a master naturalist. Classes are taught by dedicated and
respected educators who are also experts in the particular subjects they
teach including William R. Stott Jr., renowned ornithologist, teacher,
and field trip leader.

An Introduction to Mid-Atlantic Forests
An introduction to the identification, ecology, management and policy of
forest ecosystems, with particular emphasis on the trees of Virginia,
Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

27,November 3, 10, 24, December 1

Instructor : Dr. J. Chris Haney has done extensive research on the
forests of the Great Smoky Mountains. He is the director of the
David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program for The Nature
Conservancy and has taught in the LEAPP program since its beginning.
Seeing Nature Through Digital Photography
Capture Fall's beauty, learn new skills, and improve your technique.
Whether you are just beginning to experiment with digital photography or
have been taking pictures for a long time, all are welcome. The only
requirement is a basic understanding of photography.
Class dates: 7-9:00 pm, September 15, 22, 29, October 7, 13, 27,
November 4

Location: Packard Center, Upper Conference Room, 4022 Hummer Road,
Annandale, VA
Cost: $150/members, $175/non-members; plus supply fee of $25
Instructor: Laura Stephens is an aspiring professional photographer. Her
students praise her easy-going manner, which makes even the technical
aspects of photography accessible to all.
Chesapeake Bay Ecology
Topics include geology and physical characteristics of the Bay, its
ecosystem energy flow, estuarine ecology, and the role of wetlands and
submerged aquatic vegetation. The class includes lectures, hands-on
activities, and two day-long field trips to explore important Bay
habitats.
Class dates : Saturdays, 9:30-noon, September 11, October 2, 16,
November 6; Mondays, 6:30-9:00 pm, September 13, 27, October 4, 18,
November 8

Location : Flint Hill School
Cost : $150/members, $175/non-members (Note: there may be
additional costs for field trips.)
Instructor : Fred Chanania is the Upper School Science Coordinator at
Flint Hill School in Oakton, VA, teaching biology and chemistry. He
has worked extensively with GMU graduate classes in coastal and
estuarine ecology, and regularly leads school groups to explore the Bay.
Wetlands and Waterfowl Workshop
This workshop combines the study of wetlands, the richest biomes in
North America, with the study of the waterfowl that depend on this
critical habitat for their survival.
Class dates : 7-9:00 pm, October 25, November 1, 8.
Field trip : Nov. 13 (limited to 15 people)
Location: Fairfax City Library

Instructor : Bill Stott, Jr. is a renowned ornithologist, lecturer,
teacher and field trip leader.
Fall Wildflowers Workshop
Learn about the common groups of fall wildflowers of our area, field
identification tips for fall-blooming composites and other common groups
of seasonal wildflowers, as well as how plants prepare for winter.
Class dates: 7-9:30 pm, September 13, 20
Field trip: 9-11:00 am, September 25
Location: Fairfax High School
Cost: $50/members, $60/ non-members
Instructor: Marion Lobstein is an Associate Professor of Biology, NOVA.
She is a regionally recognized botanist with over 25 years teaching
experience.
Building Birding Skills Workshop
These field-based classes will help you identify birds and will also
introduce you to the hows and whys of bird behavior. Geared mainly for
beginners, they can also be beneficial to experienced birders who want
more than a long life-list.
Class dates: 8-11:00 am, September 19, October 17, November 14
First location: Dyke Marsh
Cost: $50/members, $60/non-members
Instructor: Chuck Studholme is the owner of One Good Tern, a store for
birds and birders in Alexandria, and is an experienced field trip leader
and expert birder.
