Today I decided to do a "Big Morning" to see how many birds I could spot within
the Fairfax City limits. I started at 7:00 AM and ended at noon. I tallied 58
species including 11 warbler species. Most of my birding was at Van Dyck Park
and Daniel's Run Park. Daniel's Run was the most productive on the path that
starts at the school parking lot and runs along the stream. I had a nice
variety of warblers there along with Scarlet Tanagers, White-eyed Vireos, and
an Eastern Bluebird. A Nashville Warbler was my first for the year. In the
nearby woods I saw a Veery and heard Acadian Flycatchers and a Wood Thrush.
Van Dyck was also decent and provided me with a Magnolia Warbler, a Yellow
Warbler and a Brown Thrasher. Blackpoll Warblers and Black -throated Blue
Warblers seemed to be around in good numbers at both places. I picked up
Brown-headed Cowbird, Eastern Towhee and Rock Pigeon at other locations in
Fairfax City. Here are the lists for the two parks:
