The pleasant weather may have been responsible for the good turnout at this
morning's Friends of Dyke Marsh walk. Participants included a number of
students from a private DC school who arrived by taxi and departed by Fairfax
Connector and the Metro. There was a good diversity of waterfowl off the mouth
of Hunting Creek early (along with large numbers of gulls and a very few
shorebirds on the bars). The woods along the Haul Rd were relatively quiet on
the way down, but we encountered a few loose flocks of warblers (overwhelmingly
Myrtles). Small numbers of Blue Jay and Yellow-shafted Flicker were moving in
a downstream direction. The return up the Haul Rd was a bit noisier, due to
the calls of the grackles.
