7 Whimbrel (N American) were present on a small sand bar off the mouth of
Hunting Creek around 1800 this evening after the thunderstorms passed through
Alexandria. Together with 4 Caspian Terns and a couple of Ring-billed Gulls,
they occupied all of the exposed bar when I first glimpsed them. After it was
flooded by the incoming tide, they and the terns took a short flight West and
landed on the main flats just N of the creeks main channel.
Other shorebirds present: 27 Semipalmated Plover, 2 Killdeer, 4 Spotted
Sandpiper, 40 Least Sandpiper, and 25 Semipalmated Sandpiper. And there was a
male Greater Scaup among a flock of cormorant on the Potomac.
