Sorry for the late posting....biologist Pam Denmon reported seeing the first
Black Skimmer of the season (yes, one only) last week. Also, on 4/14, she saw a
male Indigo Bunting. They were both on Fisherman Island NWR, and Eastern Shore
of Virginia NWR is getting fairly birdy now, as well. So, come celebrate spring
at the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge with extended hours
at our Visitor Center. It is open daily from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Refuge trails
are open from a half an hour before sunrise to a half an hour after sunset.
Buds are opening, birds are singing, and our osprey camera reveals eggs in the
nest!
Additionally, the work of Rachel Echols, a Richmond-based nature photographer,
is on display at the Visitor Center from now through June 30. Her appealing
images of birds and other wildlife are an inspiration to budding photographers.
She took her photos on the Refuge in areas open to the public. Nature
photography is an activity that is encouraged and supported by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service.
Have some family fun at the Refuge! We now have binoculars and field guides to
lend out, as well as Nature Discovery Backpacks for kids to borrow, and
colorful âhunt and findâ activity cards for the youngest children to
complete. If your child has a few hours to explore the Refuge, get a Junior
Refuge Manager Activity Booklet for them to fill out to earn a patch.
