VA Birders,
We had our own hawk watch at Fort C. F. Smith Park, Arlington Co., today,
mainly between 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. Park Manager David Farner and I were at
the Bird Stream, which was not running when I got there this morning. While
the County plumber was trying to fix it, we watched the hawks flying overhead.
(The plumber replaced the circuit breaker and thought it was fixed, but then
the pump overheated and had to be shut down. We hope a new pump can be found
and installed Monday, but unfortunately, the stream will not be running for our
NVBC walk there Saturday morning.)
We counted 9 species of raptors flying over the meadow next to the stream.
They were:
Black Vulture - 4
Turkey Vulture - 2
Osprey - 1
Bald Eagle - 4
Northern Harrier - 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Broad-winged Hawk - about 100
Merlin - 1
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
