This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, Nov 23, at noon.
Top birds this week are *KELP GULL, MONK PARAKEET, and *CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD in MD and NORTHERN SHRIKE in DE.
Other birds of interest include RED-THROATED LOON, waterfowl, COOPER'S
HAWK, BALD EAGLE, CHUKAR, VIRGINIA RAIL, gulls, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER,
WHITE-EYED VIREO, sparrows, SNOW BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH, COMMON
REDPOLL, PINE SISKIN, and possible BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK.
Maryland's *KELP GULL was again in place behind the Sea Breeze Crab
House, Sandgates, St. Mary's Co, on Nov 20.
Two MONK PARAKEETS were seen Nov 21 in Montgomery Co, MD. They were
observed at close range from the Taco Bell parking lot at the
intersection of MD 97 and Aspen Hill Rd, where they sat on a wire,
preening one other.
A *CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD has been visiting a feeder on private property
near Bowie in Prince George's Co, MD, since Nov 11. This bird, a hatch
year female--and a first state record--has been banded and
photographed.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again at Prime Hook NWR, DE, on Nov 18 and
20. As before, it was found along Rte 16 (Broadkill Beach Rd), in the
vicinity of the impoundments.
A RED-THROATED LOON has been visiting Black Hill RP, Montgomery Co,
apparently since Nov 14, with reports from Nov 18, 19, and 20. On more
than one occasion it has been found in the vicinity of the pontoon
boat dock below the Visitor Center. The lake has also held SNOW GEESE
and TUNDRA SWANS.
Flights of SNOW GEESE were reported from Baltimore Co, MD, and
Arlington Co, VA. Goose flocks along Broadkill Beach Rd held a ROSS'S
GOOSE Nov 20.
Two RICHARDSON'S CACKLING GEESE were found at Piney Run Park Carroll
Co, MD, on Nov 21. On Nov 20, RICHARDSON'S CACKLING GOOSE was reported
from southern Cecil Co, MD, and western Howard Co, MD. Two
RICHARDSON'S CACKLING GEESE were seen at Rocky Gap SP, Allegany Co,
MD. And 2 RICHARDSON'S CACKLING GEESE were seen Nov 20 in Kent Co, MD,
along John Hanson Rd.
As of Nov 19, 2 BRANT were still feeding on the lawn at Baltimore's
Fort McHenry. A BLACK BRANT was reported Nov 21 from the north
campground at Indian River Inlet, DE. On Nov 20, Indian River Inlet
featured a subadult drake HARLEQUIN as well as a PURPLE SANDPIPER.
TUNDRA SWANS were seen flying over Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA, on Nov
20. On Nov 21, Dyke Marsh hosted 7 BALD EAGLES.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was found Nov 17 at Pohick Regional Park, Fairfax
Co.
On Nov 17 a COOPER'S HAWK was observed capturing a pigeon in the heart
of busy Adams-Morgan, NW DC. On Nov 20, a COOPER'S flew over
Congressional Cemetery, 18th and Mass Ave, SW DC, while a BALD EAGLE
was seen over the cemetery Nov 21.
A CHUKAR sporting a green leg band was an unusual sighting in Fairfax
Station Nov 21.
A VIRGINIA RAIL was again found at Lilypons Water Gardens, Frederick
Co, MD, on Nov 20. The Lilypons impoundments also held SNOW GEESE.
Nine BONAPARTE'S GULLS were present on the Potomac between Violette's
and Riley's Locks, Montgomery Co, Nov 22. On Nov 17, the landfill in
Salisbury, Wicomoco Co, MD, held a first-winter BLACK-HEADED GULL and
a first-winter ICELAND GULL, as well as 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
On Nov 20, the Cherry Island Landfill near Wilmington, DE, hosted 8
gull species, including 3 ICELAND, 1 GLAUCOUS, and a SILVER. An
ICELAND GULL was also found in the vicinity of Bombay Hook NWR, DE,
behind a cement factory on Long Point Rd.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were reported from Huntley Meadows Park,
Fairfax Co, Nov 18; Rock Creek Park in Bethesda, Montgomery Co, Nov
18; and Downs Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD, Nov 20. On Nov 18 an
ebullient birder scored RED-HEADED plus all other six local
woodpeckers in her Fairfax Station yard.
WHITE-EYED VIREO was a surprise find at 3 locations this week: Myrtle
Grove WMA, Charles Co, MD; a yard in Cabin John, Montgomery Co; and
along the wildlife loop at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA.
An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was found Nov 20 at the Patuxent Research
Refuge, North Tract, Anne Arundel Co, MD.
FOX SPARROWS again showed up at several locations, including Rockburn
Park, Howard Co; Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co; Fort McHenry;
Black Hill; Dyke Marsh; and, in Baltimore Co, Robert E. Lee Park and
Mears Farm.
A sprinkling of SNOW BUNTING reports include 7 BUNTINGS at Patuxent
River Naval Air Station (PRNAS), St. Mary's Co, Nov 17(and 4 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS there Nov 18); 2 SNOW BUNTINGS at Chincoteague Nov 20; and
in southern Cecil Co, MD (along New Cut Rd outside Ceciltown), Nov 20.
Three SNOW BUNTINGS and 1-2 LAPLAND LONSPURS were found Nov 20 in Kent
Co, just south of Massey on Walnut Tree Road.
In DE, a total of about 80 SNOW BUNTINGS were found Nov 20 at Rehoboth
Bay, Prime Hook NWR, and Cape Henlopen SP. Fields along Cartanza Rd,
not far from Bombay Hook, held LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS were reported from Howard Co; Croom,
Prince George's Co, MD; and Calvert Co.
A flock of COMMON REDPOLLS flew over Antietam National Battlefield,
Washington Co, MD, Nov 21. A group of 5 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen Nov
20 at Point Lookout, St. Mary's Co.
A possible BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was sighted Nov 21 just north of
Shorter's Wharf ramp, Dorchester Co, MD. It sat briefly atop a tree,
in the marsh, that holds an eagle's nest.
Those of you lucky enough to host a winter hummingbird are asked to

is working to document winter hummingbirds in the east.
