Howdy all,
Yesterday was the last day of banding for the season at the Kiptopeke banding
station. As sad as it is to see the season end, I am kind of glad that it is
over. Time to catch up on some sleep!
The last day was a little better than expected I guess. The weather was not all
that great but we did manage to catch 33 birds which, by the way, put us over
the 7,000 birds this season!! Yippee!
We ended the season with a total of 7,013 birds banded of 107 species! That is
the fourth highest total since 1994 and the highest total of species during
that same time. There was one species that we missed that we should have
caught. Red-bellied Woodpecker was are biggest miss of the season. That species
is at the station everyday and yet we missed them this year. Oh well. I am not
going to complain about catching 107 species! It has been a great year. We
banded 99 of the 100 days from the 15 August to the 22 November!! The only day
we missed was the 13 November due to the cold, damp and extremely windy
conditions. I am still amazed that it didn't rain in the morning at least a few
days this season! And yes I slept in this morning!! Past sunrise even!
So here is the totals for the last day of the season, 11/22!
Brown Creeper 3
Golden-crowned Kinglet 1
Carolina Chickadee 1
American Goldfinch 5
Red-breasted Nuthatch 3
Tufted Titmouse 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Slate-colored Junco 2
Savannah Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 5
White-throated Sparrow 5
Fox Sparrow 1
Northern Cardinal 2 how many cardinals are here!?!?!
Northern Mockingbird 1
Mourning Dove 1 second of the season
TOTAL --------------------------- 33
I want to thank everyone that stopped by the banding station this season! It
was great to see everyone again and I am already looking forward to seeing you
all next year!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
