This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, August 9, at noon.
Top birds this week are MISSISSIPPI KITE in VA, a family of AMERICAN
COOTS in MD, UPLAND SANDPIPER in MD and VA, and possible EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE in MD.
Other birds of interest include NORTHERN BOBWHITE, LEAST BITTERN,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, shorebirds, GULL-BILLED and BLACK TERNS,
LEAST FLYCATCHER, BANK SWALLOW, SEDGE WREN, DICKCISSEL
MISSISSIPPI KITES were once again soaring over the Waynewood
subdivision in southeastern Fairfax County, VA; between one and three
birds have been sighted in the vicinity of the Carl Sandburg Middle
School on August 5, 6, and 8.
A family of AMERICAN COOTS--two adults and four juveniles--were
discovered during the weekly survey at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore
Co, MD, a happy surprise and a rare breeding record. (Hart-Miller also
featured 3 LEAST BITTERNS, 14 species of shorebird, and 6 BLACK
TERNS.)
As many as 10 UPLAND SANDPIPERS are frequenting fields in southwestern
Fauquier Co, VA, with reports through Aug 8. The Woodward Turf Farm is
located south of Remington on Sumerduck Rd (Rte 651) and Rte 654.
Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at the east Mason-Dixon Farm pond on Harney
Rd in northern Frederick Co, MD, August 2. A single UPLAND SANDPIPER
was seen Aug 8 at the sod farm on John Brown Rd, Queen Anne's Co, MD.
The EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE reported last week at the Mason-Dixon Farm
was possibly glimpsed again Aug 2.
Some 22 NORTHERN BOBWHITES were observed Aug 7 at a farm near Allen's
Fresh in Charles Co, MD.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen Aug 8 along Twin Branches
Trail in Reston, Fairfax Co. On Aug 8, 4 juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS visited a backyard in Baltimore.
Three PIPING PLOVERS were seen Aug 6 at Cape Henlopen SP, DE. Nine
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at the Mason-Dixon pond the evening of Aug 3.
A smattering of shorebirds is being reported from Cameron Run, along
Eisenhower Avenue near Bluestone Rd, in Alexandria, VA. As many as 9
shorebird species plus assorted waders are visiting the Williams Rd
pond in Elkton, Cecil Co, MD. Spots to check for shorebirds in
Montgomery Co, MD, include Lake Needwood in Rockville and the
drawn-down pond at the Soccerplex in Germantown.
On Aug 8, a GULL-BILLED TERN was noted at the north pond at Ted Harvey
Conservation Area, DE.
A LEAST FLYCATCHER has been singing through the summer near a
residence in southwestern Loudoun Co, VA.
More than 1,000 BANK SWALLOWS were decorating the wires along River Rd
southwest of White's Ferry, western Montgomery Co, on Aug 7.
As many as 4 SEDGE WRENS are singing at Ted Harvey's Logan Lane Tract,
with reports on Aug 6, 7, and 8. In Augusta Co, VA, as many as 5 SEDGE
WRENS have been found near Middlebrook, near the intersection of Mish
Barn Rd (Rte 876) with Rte 602.
As of Aug 7, 2 DICKCISSELS continued to sing in western Montgomery Co,
along River Rd southeast of White's Ferry, not far from the Patton
Turf Farm at 24000. At least 3 singing Dickcissels were still on Old
Telegraph Rd, Cecil County, Aug 8. (This is 0.8 mile south of
Middleneck Rd, south of Bohemia Mills (DeLorme 78, D2). In VA,
numerous DICKCISSELS proved a bonus this week for birders seeking the
Upland Sandpipers in Fauquier Co.
