Howdy!
Since King George ponds were covered with fog this AM, I drove straight down to
Leedstown in Westmoreland Co where I found 68 species of birds. The most
exciting bird was a Marsh Wren, my first for the county. I also had great
views of a Lincoln's Sparrow. A Merlin flushed out a flock of 125 robins that
had been feeding on cedar berries and grapes (ignoring the holly berries). One
of the two Blue-headed Vireos seen was eating a brown stinkbug. A Great Egret
was in the creek along Winter Harbor Rd in what used to be a Mill Pond but the
dam was washed out during Tropical Storm Lee. There was a big influx of swamp
sparrows (119), yellow-rumped warblers (105), hermit thrushes (18),
yellow-bellied sapsuckers (7), and Wood Ducks (40). White-throats have also
started to flow in (46) and a few White-crowneds (3). There were quite a few
Soras still around (17), though none were seen. I found no shorebirds except a
few killdeer. Other than the
yellow-rumpeds, the only warblers I had were a couple palms, a pine, and a
yellowthroat. Below are the totals for this part of the day. Numbers in
parentheses are the number of lists (out of 4) it was found in. After
Leedstown I drove on up to King George to finish up the day. I will try to
report on that tomorrow, as it is time for bed now.
All the best
