After the rain stopped this morning I went to Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, which is the closest birding spot to my home. It was a surprisingly great morning, with 77 species total and 19 warbler species. Lots of blackpoll warblers throughout the park. Yellow warblers were also notably common. Best bird was a singing Philadelphia vireo above the ruins. I could not lay eyes on it, but later learned that Tommy Goodwin had seen one behind the visitors center some time before I encountered mine. I assume it’s the same bird. I ran into a truly wonderful mixed flock at the edge of the field used for group camping. It included ovenbird, blue-winged, black-and-white, 2 Nashvilles, redstart, Cape May, multiple parulas, yellow, blackpoll, 2 black-throated-blues, yellow-throated, and prairie. Things were really hopping for a while. I also had gray-cheeked, Swainson's and wood thrushes along the boardwalk, veery near the trestle, prothonotary and Wilson's warbler near the boardwalk, bank swallow on Powell's creek, red-headed woodpecker in the woods behind the small wetland, magnolia and chestnut-sided on the hillside near the ruins, and summer tanager along the road that parallels the railroad tracks. The complete list is below.
