This is a great place to walk and to bird. A little bit of paradise in
Portsmouth, VA (go to paradisecreeknaturepark.org). The thrush I saw this
afternoon may very well have been a Gray-cheeked, though it could have been
one of the others. The huge Goldfinch flock--which sometimes includes
Bluebirds and House finches--continues. Swamp sparrows are everywhere right
now. A Clay-colored or Grasshopper Sparrow may have visited recently. Dave

Paradise Creek Nature Park, Portsmouth, US-VA
Nov 2, 2013 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Protocol: Traveling
1.0 mile(s)
4 species (+1 other taxa)
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Tree Swallow 24
Swamp Sparrow 8 There were probably more. It seemed as if they were everywhere.
American Goldfinch 80 Probably more. The flock continues.
passerine sp. 1 Decent looks at a thrush on a very low, small branch. I first though imm. Robin, then knew I had a spotted thrush. I then thought either Swainson's or Gray-cheeked as there was quite pronounced buffy coloration on the chest. There was also very heavy spotting on the chest and less heavy, perhaps finer, spotting on the belly. Bird did seem a bit chunky like a robin. It could, after all, have been a Hermit Thrush, though I don't recall seeing a Hermit Thrush with such a buffy chest etc. My impression, too, was that the bird was uniform in color as a Swainson's would be.
