VA-Birders:
Today, fifteen birders spotted 44 species on the Northern Virginia Bird Club
walk at Manassas National Battlefield in Prince William county. We started our
walk at the Deep Cut Trail parking lot off of Featherbed Lane (Route 622) just
north of Hwy 28. We then walked the Deep Cut Trail towards Brawner Farm and
returned starting at the battery of cannons near Brawner Farm. Notable finds
were a Red-breasted Nuthatch at the Deep Cut Trail parking lot, Palm Warblers,
and flyovers of a Merlin and a Raven. We also saw or heard nine sparrow
species including good looks at many Savannah Sparrows and an immature
White-crowned Sparrow along the brushy ravine of Deep Cut Trail. When we
returned to the Deep Cut Trail parking lot, we enjoyed flyovers of both
vultures, Red-tailed, Red-shouldered and Sharp-shinned Hawks.
After lunch, I then went to Brawner Farm House area and picked up Eastern
Meadowlarks in the field east of the parking lot, and Golden-crowned Kinglets
and a Hairy Woodpecker in the cedars near the farm house.
I also birded along Bull Run Post Office Road off Hwy 28 in western Fairfax
county. Notable finds were an adult White-crowned Sparrow and a Lincoln's
Sparrow in the brush below the Dominion Virginia Power's power line cut at the
Bull Run Post Office Road entrance to the Pleasant Valley Substation. Quite a
birdy location with many sparrows.
