Greetings Virginia Birders,
The Williamsburg Bird Club ventured across the James River (by ferry!) to Hog
Island Wildlife Management Area in Surry County for our regular 3rd Saturday
Field Trip. Bill Williams, VSO Board Member and one of the founders of the
Williamsburg Bird Club, led our group of 20 eager birders. Thank you, Bill!
The fields there are planted in corn, not yet harvested, and the impoundments
are full of water.
We observed 37 species with the highlight being 26 Bobolinks feeding on seed
heads at the tops of vegetation. The full list is below as Bill entered it into
eBird.
Additional species at the ferry: Forster's Tern, Royal Tern, Herring Gull,
Great Black-backed Gull, Rock Pigeon.
