Hi Folks-
DC Audubon is happy to announce the 17th Annual Chesapeake & Ohio Canal
National Historical Park Midwinter Bird Survey. The count will be held on
Saturday, January 24, 2015. In case of really bad weather, the make-up date
will be Sunday, January 25.
We hope you will consider volunteering this year to help us with this
unique, long-distance count. Your participation contributes to the
stability of our long-term bird survey project and the data we collect on
bird populations.
As in previous years, volunteers will be asked to survey a 2-5+ mile
section, tallying the number of individuals of each species that they see
for each mile (Note: without the use of multiple cars, surveying 5 miles
will require walking 10). After the count, you will be asked to report your
results electronically either by emailing your results or sharing the
results through eBird.org.

Which miles you would like to cover. The Park Service map of C&O Canal
NHP is helpful, it marks the towpath at five mile segments and give the
mileage of various access points (

We will respond within a few days to confirm your mile assignments and
provide detailed data entry instructions. If you'd feel more comfortable
joining another group instead of leading your own miles, we can work that
out.
The canal is 184.5 miles long, requiring more than 60 volunteers. We are
always in need of new volunteers, so please spread the word to other
birders who might be interested in assisting with the count. Last year we
covered over 65% of the canal and counted more than 15,000 individual birds
representing 100 different species. With your help we can cover even more
of the canal and see even more birds this year.
