SHOREBIRD INTERNS
Name of Cooperating Station: U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague Island, Virginia
Financial Support: A stipend of $150/week living expenses plus housing.
Position Dates: Start- May 21 at the latest!!; Ending- August
(Approximately 12 weeks from start date).
Application Deadline: March 1, 2006 (Multiple positions to be filled)
Work Description: Shorebird interns will primarily collect data and
monitor a population of the threatened piping plover and other beach
nesting birds on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia.
Duties include: Daily piping plover, oystercatcher, tern, and skimmer
surveys including nest searches, behavioral observations, nest/brood
monitoring, and predator monitoring. Intern will have the opportunity
to participate in other refuge management programs and studies such as
aquatic invertebrate sampling, waterfowl and shorebird surveys, water
level and salinity readings, marine animal stranding data collection,
vegetation sampling, Delmarva fox squirrel nest box repair, and public
interpretation.
A. Required Background: A recent graduate or student (Junior
status) in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources
Management, or related field; communication skills, writing
skills, desire to work with people; must have good
observational skills, and valid driver's license.
B. Desired Background: Experience working with shorebirds,
waterfowl, and wading birds or a background in ornithology,
or
general biology; ability to record detailed observations;
knowledge of computers helpful.
Educational Opportunities: An opportunity to develop research skills and
to study wildlife management techniques through actual field research.
Training: All training will be OJT, (on-the-job-training) with
professional wildlife biologists and management staff.
Housing: Housing will be provided in the form of either a residential
type house (the former lighthouse caretakers' home) or a mobile home,
both located on the refuge. The housing will be shared with other
interns and seasonal employees.
Transportation: A personal vehicle is not required. However, you will
benefit from some form of transportation (car or bicycle) for shopping.
Area Description: Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is located on
Assateague Island, Virginia; a barrier island on the Delmarva Peninsula
(Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) where the summers can be hot and
humid with many annoying insects. Fall season tends to be mild with
frequent rains and cool temperatures.
