Greetings Virginia Birders,
Barbara Houston asked me to bird around Hog Island in Surry County with her
this morning. The impoundments have quite a bit of water -- great for the
soon-to-arrive waterfowl and the current wading residents but not very friendly
for shore birds. The dominant crop there now is CORN…and lots of it. The
bothersome insects were the large flies -- not sure of the species -- but some
of us would call them "horse flies." Very annoying.
We stayed on the main road for most of the morning and then walked along the
river in front of the residences for a bit and found some warblers in the trees
in front of the houses. We ended up with 36 species with some notable misses.
Northern Harrier was the surprise bird for the morning -- circling low over the
road near the observation deck.
The complete list is below, as entered into eBird. Barbara got some great
photos as she always does. I'm sure she'll send a link soon.
PS: For the butterflyers out there, quite a few Red-spotted Purples, Buckeyes,
and Cloudless Sulphurs.
