Lynn and I visited the Fairfax County parkland W of Pleasant Valley Drive this
morning, targeting the big fields near the intersection of the NE-SW and NW-SE
powerlines.
Field highlights: Y-B Chat (seen singing), Blue Grosbeak (seen singing),
Prairie Warbler, Brown Thrasher
Wood highlights: Wood Thrush
We both heard an intriguing cluck call, repeated several times, as we followed
the narrower powerline cut through the woods, around 6:20 AM or so. Nothing
like anything we know. Best guess, and it's a long shot, is an "alternate"
Wild Turkey sound, i.e., not the regular gobble.
Does anyone know of an on-line resource where I can specifically dial up male /
female / immature / mating calls? I've already tried the Macaulay library, and
the several Turkey recordings I tried there all sounded more or less like the
familiar gobble sound.
