Russ Taylor & I birded the northern section of Great Falls NP in Fairfax
County. We walked up-stream to the dam and back. We found a Northern
Rough-winged Swallow nesting in a cavity in a tree that was lying against the
side of the dam. Lots of Great-crested Fly-catchers and Pewees. Yellow-billed
Cuckoo was heard. Yellow-throated Vireo was heard. The LAWA was active feeding
and chipping next to the still water of the old canal. There were dozens of
Great Blue Herons in the river. I wonder if these are fledglings? Is there a
rockery nearby?
Cheers,
Phil
