Our group of eight tallied 52 species on this glorious morning. One of the
volunteers shared pictures of
a barred owl family that he taken in a tree off the Carriage Trail so we added
a trek along the RidgeTrail,
the Quarry and Carriage. Alas we did not see the three owlets and two adults.
However elsewhere in the
park, we did have good looks at a very cooperative parula singing his heart
out, a black crowned night heron
and newly fledged eagle who was trying his "heavy" wings and doing more hopping
than flying. We also saw
juvenile red-wings and kingbirds being fed by adults upstream. All in all it
was a productive morning.
This Sunday walk is open to all and meets at 8:00 am in the visitor's center
courtyard. -- Marshall Rawson, McLean VA
