The Northern Virginia Bird Club enjoyed a productive visit to Leesylvania State
Park in Woodbridge this morning. The weather was great and the still-icy
Potomac was beautiful under sunny skies. Open water was full of hundreds of
common and red-breasted mergansers, with a smattering of bufflehead, scaup, and
ruddy ducks. A flock of tundra swans that flew by was especially picturesque
against the blue sky, Many bald eagles were sighted sitting on the ice or in
trees on the river's edge. Most of the common winter residents were seen,
including both kinglets, hermit thrush, yellow-rumped warbler, yellow-bellied
sapsucker, brown creeper, and cedar waxwing. The complete list of 52 species
