I hadn't planned this trip - I discovered that the Goochland Farmers Market
opened an hour later than usual. The local coffee shop in Goochland has gone
out of business so, I headed over to this nearby birding spot. I didn't have
the binoculars with me so, I had to resort to my still reasonably good hearing
and cataract compromised vision to do what Ted Floyd calls "bare naked
birding". Actually did better than expected - a House Wren quietly singing
away to himself in a vine close to the road, and two Northern Waterthushes
(year bird!) obligingly perched near the road were the highlights. There were
more that weren't singing and some too far away to identify by eye without
binos.
I've found this spot to be surprisingly productive. As well as the park
itself, the road which dead ends at the railroad has a good mix of habitat.
It's located on US 522 immediately north of the James on the Goochland side.
